Language Arts:

We have started to learn about long vowel sounds this month.  We have met June and her pet mule Huey (Long u), Abe the Skating Hare (Long a), Old Joe Crow (Long o), and Ike and his Flying Bike (Long i).  The students have also started writing their own stories during "Work on Writing" time.  We are learning all about the writing process - planning an outline, creating a rough draft, editing, and publishing.  We are looking forward to hearing a lot of creative stories soon!

Math:

We have been working on mastering our math facts to 10 this month.  We also learned a new song to help us learn skip counting by 2s.  We recently began investigating 3D objects.

Social Studies:  We have working with the lyrics of O Canada and learning about the meaning of the words.  We have also started our mapping unit.  The students are learning about how to read different maps.  We have learned about symbols and cardinal directions.  We will also be looking at our homes on Google Maps in upcoming weeks.

Science:  We have finished our unit on the Characteristics of Materials.  The students created many interesting items with the wrong type of material for their homework assignment.  They are currently on display in the window by the office.  We have started to learn about our 5 senses.  We played sound bingo and Telephone.  We also shook mystery objects in boxes and had to guess what was making the sound.  We even got to smell mystery items in canisters for one experiment - some of the smells were pretty gross!

Health:

Our final unit of the year is about healthy eating.  We completed our Kids In The Know unit.  The children are now able to identify safe and unsafe situations, as well as the difference between a "Keep" and a "Share" secret.
