Language Arts:
We have been busy learning our new classroom routines in the first few days of school. We have started to review our letter names and sounds from Kindergarten. We have also met The Thick Thorny Thing who taught us that sometimes two letters work together to say a different sound. The Thick Thorny Thing has been teaching us all about the "th" sound. We have been playing many games with our names and the names of our new classmates. Our new home reading and sight word program materials have been sent home. Reading on a daily basis with your child is one of the most important things you can do to not only help them develop reading skills but to also prepare them for future academic success!
Math:
We have been working in our new math number booklets for the numbers 0-10. We have been learning all about the numbers zero and one this week. We have also started experimenting with how to determine if a number is odd or even. We started our new problem solving notebooks as well. Each morning we count the number of days we have been in school in a variety of ways.
Social Studies: In Social Studies we have been learning about the different groups we belong to and how we all work together to make these groups and our community stronger. We have also been reading about Terry Fox and what made him a Canadian hero.
Science:
We have started our first science unit on daily and seasonal changes. We have been investigating the different changes we are seeing outside as summer turns to fall and about day and night. Each morning we practice the order of the days of the week and months of the year. Be sure to ask your child if they can remember our songs for these concepts and have them sing for you!
Health:
We have started our bus safety unit this month. Ask your child if they can remember any of the important bus safety rules we have been learning about. We even have a couple of songs for this unit as well!
